Hlanganisa has a large footprint funding community-based organisations for institutional and programmatic impact. Funding for grassroots organisations is a strategic resource that facilitates for much-needed social change. 

 

Through our small grants, Hlanganisa seeks to bridge the gap between donors and organisations working at community level and using on the ground knowledge to find organisations uplifting their communities. Our model facilitates for that vital link between funding and grassroots organisations implementing impactful programmes. Hlanganisa currently funds community-based organisations in eSwatini, Lesotho,  Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Types of Grant Making

Institutional Strengthening Grant (ISG)

Hlanganisa supports institutional strengthening of community-based organisations out of recognition that many fail to operationalise because they don’t have institutional capacity to deliver on their programme. Applications from community-based organisations that meet the criteria of our individual call for proposals. ISG applications need to be in response to an open call for organisations meeting the criteria set out in the individual calls.

 

Grants are typically up to R150 000 per year.

Capacity Enhancement Grant

Hlanganisa supports ad hoc capacity enhancement for current and previous partners. This capacity enhancement request should be aimed at strengthening the ability of the organisation to deliver on their programme and must be aligned to Hlanganisa’s capacity enhancement goals. Hlanganisa has three windows each year where partners can submit applications.

 

Hlanganisa will consider capacity enhancement applications for grants up to R30 000 each.

Infrastructure Support Grant

Hlanganisa supports organisations to acquire infrastructure to help advance their work. This grant is only open to current and previous recipients of the Institutional Strengthening Grant. 

​

The maximum budget allowable for infrastructure support is R20 000.

Movement Strengthening and Alliance Building

Social justice movements and alliances are critical levers of change are key players in the achievement and sustenance of social justice and yet they are often underfunded. This grant considers applications from both individual movements and collaboratives all at grassroots level. This grant will also support convenings, strategic meetings and collaborative applications.


Applications for up to R100 000.

Research Grant

Hlanganisa values evidence-based approaches to programmes, community research is often undervalued and yet to has potential to help grassroots understand how to tailor their approaches in effective ways.

 

Organisations/movements qualifying for the grant should have a proposal submitted to Hlanganisa for consideration and the amount disbursed will be up to  R50 000.

Emergency Response Grant

In an effort to responding to campaigns and ad hoc initiatives necessitated by crises, Hlanganisa has an emergency response grant to allow for short turnaround times for grant disbursements.

 

The grant allows for response to disasters and emergencies aligned to Hlanganisa’s priority areas.
